A $450,000 budget for the current year was adopted here today at the 24th annual conference of the Yiddish Scientific Institute-YIVO. The budget was presented by Louis Sobel, chairman of the card of directors of the Institute.
Isidore Sobeloff, executive director of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit, who was the principal speaker at the opening session of the conference, analyzed the trends in local Jewish community organizations in America. He compared the role of the Jewish federations and welfare funds in the United States with that played by the kehillas in pre-war Europe. Dr. Max Weinreich reviewed the work of the YIVO during the 24 years of its existence.
A report on the difficulties faced by the Israel Government in dealing with the immigrants from Europe and Moslem lands was given at the conference by Dr. Paul Frisdman who was invited by the Israel authorities to study the health situation in the Jewish state. Dr. Friedman emphasized that the Yemenite Jews find it much easier to adjust themselves in Israel than any other immigrant elements.
