The State Department has declined to comment on a report that the U.S. has granted Israel export licenses for the purchase here of radar equipment for air raid precautionary installations. It was explained that this government does not make known the exact nature of munitions furnished to Near Eastern states although it does not object if the recipient desires to publish this information on its own.
However, sources close to the State Department consider it quite likely that radar equipment may have been authorized for Israel because of its obvious defensive character. It was also pointed out that Israel has a long coast line and that possible air raids from Kgypt might be better fought if adequate warning is received.
