Paul Paray, conductor of the Israel Symphony Orchestra, resigned today and will not participate in the tour arranged for the orchestra in the United States next year. His resignation is due to a conflict which developed over who should conduct the orchestra’s 60 scheduled concerts in the United States.

M. Paray, a Frenchman, insisted that as the permanent musical director of the orchestra he should conduct an appreciable number of concerts, especially in the major American cities. However, the promoters of the American tour insisted that the concerts in the major cities be conducted by Sergei Koussevitsky and Leonard Bernstein.
