The Arab League may accept Transjordan’s annexation of the Arab part of Palestine, according to a report from Cairo published in the London press today. The report says that Arab states, other than Transjordan, may even now be considering peace with Israel.
“The question of peace between the Arabs and Israel will be raised at the meeting of the political committee of the Arab League, for it appears that the solution of this problem can no longer be delayed,” the report said, quoting informed Arab circles in Cairo. The meeting of the Political Committee is scheduled to take place on May 10.
The Beirut radio today reported that King Abdullah yesterday declared that the Arab states’ opposition to a peace settlement with Israel is contrary to the interests of the Arab refugees. The broadcast also quoted the Cairo daily newspaper Alzman as having said that the League is prepared to accept Transjordan’s annexation move on condition that this is only a temporary measure which will remain valid only until a final solution of the Palestine problem is achieved.
