President Trunan today bid Israel Ambassador Eliahu Elath farewell at the White House and presented the Ambassador with a photograph inscribed, “with kindest regards and best wishes.”
Mr. Elath told White House newsmen, when he emerged from the President’s office, that he thanked Mr. Truman for contributions to Israel. The Ambassador told the President that, as one who has been here five years (he was with the Jewish Agency before the establishment of Israel) he had many opportunities to “learn how much the President contributed personally to Israel’s cause.” He added: “The President certainly has a great share in making Israel possible.”
Mr. Elath also thanked the President for the hospitality of the American people. He said that the purpose of this last visit to the White House was to say goodbye and “to thank the President for everything he has done for Israel.” The Ambassador and Mrs. Elath will leave Washington May 26 and on June 5 will fly form New York to Israel. After a brief visit in Israel they will proceed tursondon where Mr. Elath will assume his duties as Israel Minister to the United Kingdom.
