The Jewish Central Board of Greece today sent congratulations to Police Brigadier Anghelos Evert on the occasion of his promotion to the command of the national police force.

During the Nazi occupation of Greece, Brig. Evert, then chief of the Athens police, rescued hundreds of Jews from death camps at great personal risk. He issued to Jews, and personally countersigned, identification cards which bore false Christian names. He also cooperated with Allied intelligence agents.
