Tiran, Bishop of the Armenian Church of North America, said in a letter published in the New York Times today that “it should constantly be borne in mind that the religious world has a real interest in Jerusalem as a whole” and that “this interest needs to be made effective and needs to be safeguardedty an international authority.”

The Bishop’s letter added that as far as protection of the Holy Places is concerned, “one would imagine that the Government of the Kingdom of Jordan, in whose occupation zone these Holy Places are situated, would neither demolish them nor obstruct access to them by bona fide pilgrims. Arab and other Moslem Governments in the past have generally held in high respect the Christian shrines in Jerusalem,” the letter added.
