Monte Harris, a British Jew who was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for possession of explosives, may be released within the next ten days and emigrate to Israel, it was reported in the British press today.
Harris, who has served 21 months of his term, was arrested during a series of raids by London police following the bomb killing of a young Briton in what was believed to be a plot by an underground Jewish movement. The bomb was meant for Capt. Roy Farran, British soldier whom the Stern Group threatened to execute for his murder of a youthful Jew in Palestine, but killed his younger brother instead.
The report about Harris states that as a result of negotiations between the Israel legation and the Home Office Harris will be released if he agrees to renounce his British citizenship and leaves the country never to return. If he agrees, the report stated, he will be escorted to a vessel leaving for Israel. The Israel legation had “no comment” on the report.
