Edmund I. Kaufmann, noted philanthropist and former president of the Zionist Organization of America, died here today of a heart ailment. He was 64 years old.
During his presidency in 1940-41, the headquarters of the Zionist Organization of America was transferred to Washington. He was a personal friend of Dr. Chaim Weizmann and was president of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.
Born in Detroit, Mr. Kaufman first took an active interest in Zionist affairs after he established a close friendship with Dr. Stephen S. Wise and Justice Louis D. Brandeis. He was an active leader of the United Jewish Appeal in Washington and participated actively in the affairs of local Jewish institutions.
(A statement mourning the death of Mr. Kaufmann was issued in New York today by Benjamin Browdy, president of the Zionist Organization of America. Mr. Browdy stressed the role which Mr. Kaufmann played in Zionism during the past decade.)
