Two squadrons of the Israel Navy have now completed their summer maneuvers, it was announced today. The three-week operation, the most extensive ever undertaken by the Jewish state’s fleet, was held in various areas of the Eastern Mediterranean Sea.
At one time or another, units of the force sailed near the Turkish coast, Cyprus and Greece and called at Rhodes. A special problem involved defensive tactics against mock air raids.
The maneuvers concluded here yesterday when Premier David Ben Gurion, top-ranking Army, Navy and Air Force officers, members of the Cabinet and of the Parliament reviewed the returning units. In an address to the personnel of the two squadrons, the Premier pointed out that because Israel is surrounded by hostile nations on three sides, it is only possible to continue immigration if the Jewish state controls the sea.
