Finance Minister Eliezer Kaplan, addressing the Knesset, outlined the government’s policy to combat inflation. “The fight against inflation concerns the masses more than the employers,” he said. He pointed out that the government considers it essential “to bring home to the public as a whole our great anxiety in our present situation, and in our immediate future.”
Emphasizing that it is the aim of the government to raise the standard of living, the Minister declared: “It is clear that the standard of living cannot be improved except as a result of an increase in national production and productivity. In the present circumstances, any demand for wage or income increases, without a corresponding production increase, strengthens the inflationary tendencies.”
