This generation of Jews could make the same mistake as those who underestimated the dangers of Nazism, Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the American section of the Jewish Agency, declared here today addressing a United Israel Appeal rally.
During our lifetime, Dr. Goldmann said, older states like Lithuania and Latvia disappeared and the Jewish state “is in no less danger.” The Arabs, he emphasized, are 15 miles from Tel Aviv. “There is still no peace and there is even the danger of a second round of warfare,” he pointed out. “Israel is still without internationally-accepted boundaries and is, in addition, facing the gravest economic crisis.
“The citizens of Israel are today accepting superhuman burdens, and the financial front will be the decisive one which the Israelis cannot meet alone,” Dr. Goldmann concluded. “Now, and in the coming years, world Jewry will have to make vast, even increasing, contributions.”
