Touro Synagogue Adds Five New Members to Its Board; Commemorates Washington’s Letter

The annual meeting of the Society of Friends of the Touro Synagogue here, which is one of America’s national historic shrines, elected five new directors, and reelected Dr. Bernard C. Friedman of this city as president and chairman of the board. The meeting was followed by exercises commemorating the 160th anniversary of the letter sent to the congregation by President George Washington, on Aug. 21, 1790, extolling religious freedom.

The five new directors are Jacob Blaustein, president of the American Jewish Committee; Louis Finkelstein, president of the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York; Dr. Samuel Belkin, president of Yeshiva University of New York; Dr. A.L. Sachor of Boston and Dr. Nelson Glueck, president of the Hebrew Union College of Cincinnati. Among the 30 directors reelected were Arthur Hays Sulzberger, publisher of The New York Times, Senator Herbert H. Lehman, Morris Morgenstern, Judge Edgar J. Nathan, Jr., the Rev. Dr. David de Sola Pool and Judge Joseph M. Proskauer, all of New York, and Mrs. Cyrus Adler of Philadelphia.
