The Jews of Vienna are quite concerned over the fact that an amendment to the restitution laws proposed by six People’s Party and Social Democratic Party deputies has not yet been scrapped despite a vigorous public protest meeting held two weeks ago against the measure, which Jewish leaders termed “a 1950 edition of the Nuremberg racial laws.”

The Vienna Jewish Community has demanded that the present restitution laws, which it considers inade quate, must not be undercut in any way. The Community has also demanded that the government return to their Jewish former owners all apartments and factories confiscated by the Nazis. In addition, it urges the establishment of a Jewish restitution fund and the payment of compensation to all persons detained by the Nazis. The compensation funds should be derived from fines on Nazis, war criminals and any Nazi assets which are available, the Community recommends.
