“The Tablet,” official organ of the Catholic hierrchy here, commenting on the forthcoming debate in the United Nations on the issue of Jerusalem, declared that the attitude taken by the A ab League and by Jordan is “unrealistic.”
The journal says the Arab plan for internationalization of Jerusalem is wholly impracticable in the face of present world conditions, “except as a means of encouragement of Soviet infiltration into the Holy land.” On the other hand, the present situation cannot last indefinitely, the paper said, noting friction between Jordan and Israel on the issue.
The only realistic approach, the journal declares, to solution of the Jorusalem problem is that offered by Israel, which “produced a concrete plan at least and did not lost itself in impractical speculation, as did the U.N. Trusteeship Council.”
The Catholic paper asserted that Israel’s plan for Jerusalem “does not meet all Catholic objections,” but it is preferable to the alternative proposals laid down by the Arab league or the Trusteeship Council. The paper predicted that the Jewish state’s recommendations on Jerusalem would, with modifications, be accepted.
