A total of 170,000 claims for indemnity for victims of the former Nazi regime in Germany have been filed with the authorities in Bavaria up to the end of September, according to a report by Restitution Commissioner Dr. Philip Auerbach to the budget commission of the Bavarian Parliament. Of these claims, he told the commission, 10,000 had been settled.
He said that 23,000,000 Deutsche Marks ($5,000,000) had been paid out to ##2,000 ex-victims, partly in the form of advances. The restitution commissioner opposed provisions of the restitution law drafted by the American authorities in Germany which concerned farm property. German farmers who acquired in good faith “Aryan##zed” Jewish farm properties, he declared, should not be forced to make restitution. ##e estimated the value of confiscated Nazi property in Bavaria at 260,000,000 Deutsche ##arks ($57,000,000) exclusive of jewels and art objects.
