Responding to Vice-President Alben W. Barkley’s warning that “no greater tragedy could befall the western world and the Middle East, in particular, than the collapse of Israel,” more than 600 Jewish leaders from 74 Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and North-West Virginia communities yesterday resolved at the United Jewish Appeal’s tri-state conference here to continue intensified effort to raise record sums of cash for immigration and settlement programs in Israel.

This action followed presentation of community checks totaling $402,000 for immediate transmission to the U.J.A. This sum brought to more than $1,500,000 the cash raised by the tri-state Jews in the last 15 months for U.J.A. programs in Israel, Europe, the Moslem lands and the United States.

The Vice-President told the conference that democracy is on the march not only in Korea but in Israel. He appealed for added efforts by American Jewry to help Israel overcoms internal economic crisis, and serious pressures of “disaster immigration” from Iraq, Rumania and elsewhere.
