M.J. Ashkanasy, president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry and of the Victorian Board of Jewish Deputies, has resigned both positions, it was reported here today in a Melbourne dispatch.

Although no official explanation is given for the resignations, it is under-stook that Mr. Ashkanasy’s action was due to the rejection of his demand that the Executive Council alone carry on the fight against German immigration to Australia. Hitherto the campaign has been conducted by both the Executive Council and the Jewish Council to Combat Fascism and Anti-Semitism.

Mr. Ashkanasy is reported to have charged that the latter body has “Communist tendencies.” He is also said to have maintained that the Jewish community, in its fight against “Volksdeutsche” immigration, must approach the government with “clean hands.”
