Fund-raising for Israel in the Toronto region has declined about 20 percent, according to a report submitted to the Ontario Regional Conference of the Zionist Organization of Canada. Addressing the conference, Wilfred Gordon, regional chairman of the United Israel Appeal, described as “a tragic paradox” the increase in Israel’s needs for financial assistance and the decrease in contributions from Jewish communities in the region.
Mr. Gordon attributed the decline in fund-raising to two factors: first, the 1948-49 campaigns were oversubscribed under the impetus of Israel’s war of independence and, second, the novelty of the establishment of the Jewish state is wearing off. He appealed for greater efforts to overcome the sense of apathy which has set in among the Jewish communities. The conference was also addressed by Dr. Abba Hillel Silver.
