Admiral Lewis L. Strauss, former member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission, yesterday declared that the concept of the U.S. as a “melting pot” does not mean standardization of all Americans. He spoke at the starting exercises of a week-long celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Jewish community of Charleston.
Citing the history of American leaders in various fields, Admiral Strauss pointed out that they were of different religious faiths and of varied cultural groups. Earlier in the day, a plaque was dedicated to the memory of Francis Salvador, the first Jew to die in defense of America in the Revolutionay War.
