The Israel Army will take over some 40 work villages and semi-permanent camps on December 1 for a period of four months during which the military will provide essential services for the immigrants.
During the winter the Army will operate transportation facilities for the camps, will keep open the roads to them, will provide medical assistance and some child welfare help. It is estimated that some 1,500 children will be wintered in Army camps which are better winter procfed than the work centers, and members of the Army’s women corps will help take care of younger children.
The present Jewish Agency and Histadrut sick fund staffs maintained in the camps will come under the Army’s supervision. In addition, some 200 physicians have been called up from the reserves to serve in the camps, as have been nurses and teachers.
The Jewish Agency announced today that it has spent about $9,000,000 for the repair of dwellings for new immigrants and for the renovation of 8,500 rooms in cities and in villages, thereafter making them available to the newcomers.
