A free zone will be established at the Haifa port, at the mouth of the Kishon River, former Communications Minister David Remez said today in an address to the Israel Maritime League. Mr. Remez, who is now Minister of Education, said that once peace is restored, Jordan might be given free access to the port.
The Israel Minister also disclosed that a canal capable of accommodating light cargo vessels will be constructed at the Haifa port, in the Kishon River sector. Reporting on Israel’s maritime fleet, M. Remez said that two-thirds of the nearly 500,000 Jewish immigrants who have arrived in Israel since the proclamation of statehood were transported on Israel ships. Most of the country’s citrus exports will be loaded on Israel vessels, he added. He also reviewed plans for the operation of a luxury vessel for Israel-bound tourists.
