Rabbinical Meeting Urges Rabbis to Join American Armed Forces As Chaplains

A resolution urging rabbis “to answer the call of our armed services to serve as chaplains and to offer spiritual guidance to thousands of young men and women of the Jewish faith who are now, or will be, in uniform” was adopted last night at the 70th annual meeting of the New York Board of Rabbis. The Board includes 500 Conservative, Reform and Orthodox rabbis in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. (The National Jewish Welfare Board today reported that there are 37 Jewish chaplains on duty with U.S. forces throughout the world.)

The meeting also adopted a resolution calling upon Congress to extend a grant in-aid to Israel. Another resolution recommended supervision of the Holy Places in Palestine by the United Nations, without establishing international political control over the Jerusalem areas. The session also appealed to Congress to join the other members of the United Nations in ratifying the genocide pact. It further urged Congress to east a Fair Employment Practices Commission program” as speedily as possible.”
