Anticipating that the question of compensation to Palestine Arabs who left their properties in Israel and fled to neighboring countries will soon come to the forefront, the United Nations Conciliation Commission today decided to start preparing a study on this subject, as well as on the question of Arab resettlement.
Members of the Conciliation Commission today indicated that they consider the decision of the recent meeting of the Arab League in Cairo to start a resettlement program for Palestine refugees in Arab countries “a step forward to the final solution of the Arab refugee question.” They also expressed the opinion that the implementation of such a resettlement program may take another two years, there fore they believe that no immediate rapprochement between the Arab countries in Israel can be expected.
It was learned here that the resettlement program will be financed not only by the U.N. Relief Works and Rehabilitation Agency, but also by an international loan and by funds from the United States granted under President Truman’s Point Four” program (Israel has on various occasions informed the United Nations of its readiness to contribute about $3,000,000 as initial Israel aid for the resettlement of Palestinian Arabs outside the Jewish state.)
