The British Government will consider “carefully and sympathetically” Israel’s claims for $1,500,000,000 in reparations from Germany, Minister of State Kenneth Younger told the House of Commons today. However, he added that he could not, at this time, give assurances in behalf of the government that provisions to satisfy this claim would be included in the German peace treaty.

The government statement came in reply to questions from Anthony Greenwood and George Thomas asking the Foreign Secretary for assurances that provisions to satisfy Israel’s claims for reparation for the murder and torture of Jewish victims would be included in the German peace treaty.

(In Paris, a French Foreign Office spokesman has expressed support for a hearing of Israel’s claim for reparations from Germany. The official said the Israeli note is receiving careful attention by the French Government, but he doubted that it could be brought up at the current four-power foreign ministers conference.)
