The Security Council’s decision to defer further consideration of the Israeli-Syrian dispute until after it has heard a report from Major General William E. Riley, U.N. truce chief in Palestine, was welcomed today in Israeli circles as providing an opportunity for settlement of the issues on the local level through the Mixed Armistice Commission.
In U.N. circles it is considered “quite likely” that when the Security Council next meets it will have before it a progress report from Col. Bennet de Ridder, acting truce chief who will chair the meeting of the Mixed Armistice Commission. These same circles believe that if the report shows that progress is being made on a local level the Council will again defer action.
