Sharp criticism of the conduct of the Bavarian State Restitution Office was voiced today by the Bavarian Social Democratic Party which charged that since the removal of Dr. Philip Auerbach as director of the bureau, no assistance or indemnification payments have been made to Nazi victims. The party demanded that police now occupying the restitution office be removed so that the office can resume normal operations.
At the same time, the Parliamentary opposition moved in the judicial committee for a sweeping Parliamentary investigation of the arrest of Auerbach. Auerbach is now being held pending trial on fraud charges. A statement by Bavarian Minister of State Richard Ringelmann earlier this week, reported the results of an investigation of the office by the Bavarian Supreme Court of Accounts and declared that Auerbach had been “above reproach” in his handling of credit.
The Circle of Former Persecutees issued a statement yesterday protesting against the standstill in the implementation of the indemnification law.
