The Canadian Government has been urged to use its good offices with the great powers to ensure that firm measures “against resurgence of German fascism and militarism” will be included in any peace treaty or settlement in the development of the North Atlantic Treaty, it was revealed today.
The request was made by the Canadian Jewish Congress in a memorandum to Lester B. Pearson, Secretary of State for External Affairs. The memorandum stressed that “unless well-conceived safeguards are devised, human rights and fundamental freedoms will be widely violated in Germany because of the educative and youth program of the past 20 years of Nazi rule.”
The Congress document also urged that the projected Four Power Conference of Foreign Ministers include on its agenda solemn repudiation by the whole of Germany of Nazi misdeeds and ideology; just punishment of all those guilty, and effective restitution and conpensation for the victims of German persecution.
