Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, leader of the American Zionist movement, today left by plane for Israel where he intends to spend four weeks. At a farewell luncheon tendered to him by the Zionist Organization of America prior to his departure, he emphasized that he is not going to the Jewish state on a mission but on a visit “to learn and observe.”
Benjamin Browdy, Z.O.A. president, who presided at the luncheon, paid high tribute to Dr. Silver as “one of the foremost Jewish leaders of our time.” Dr. Emanuel Neumann, who was one of the speakers, emphasized that Dr. Silver has been expected in the Jewish state by the people of Israel for a long time. The last time Dr. Silver visited Israel was two years ago.
Dr. Silver declared that he hope “to bring the valiant men and women of Israel reassurance of the unabated interest of American Jewry and of their support to the State of Israel.” Mr. Browdy, in his speech, also touched upon Israel’s charges against Iraq and expressed hope that the United States representative on the U.N. Conciliation Commission “will see the justice of Israel’s cause” which is now up for consideration by the Commission.
