The Detroit Jewish News, an English-Jewish weekly newspaper now in its tenth year, has acquired the Detroit Jewish Chronicle, it was announced here today. The Chronicle suspends publication tomorrow and the Jewish News thus becomes the only English-Jewish newspaper in Michigan. It will continue under the editorship of Philip Slomovitz who is the president of the American Association of English-Jewish Newspapers.
During 19 of the first 25 years of the Chronicle’s existence prior to the founding of The Jewish News, Mr. Slomovitz was its editor. Before joining the Chronicle he was on the staff of the Detroit News, after an apprenticeship as night editor of the University of Michigan Daily. The Jewish News was founded by Mr. Slomovitz early in 1942 with the cooperation of a group of community leaders headed by the late Fred M. Butzel.
The Archive of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency includes articles published from 1923 to 2008. Archive stories reflect the journalistic standards and practices of the time they were published.
