The Rumanian anti-Zionist campaign reached a new degree of viciousness this week when the newspaper Viata Noua, published by the Communist-controlled Jewish Democratic Committee, charged Rumanian Zionists with collaboration with Hitler and Antonescu during the war.
The newspaper quotes Zionist organs allegedly lauding the Nazi and Rumanian armies and declares that the “Jewish bourgeoisie bitterly regretted that it could not participate directly without intermediaries in the pillage.” It also asserts that Zionist leaders continually assured the Hitlerite governors of their devotion, showing that they had ‘full confidence’ in the bravery and wisdom of the King and of the leader of the Rumanian state.”
The Communist Jewish publication, in an attempt to destroy the status of the Zionists, adds that the “devotion of the Zionist bourgeolade to the Hitler regime went so far as to accept cynically the massacre of he Jewish population.” It publishes a facsimile of a statement issued July, 1941, by the Union of Jewish Communities and signed by president William Filderman, Chief Rabbi Alexander Shafran and secretary general A. Carp at the insistence of the authorities, calling on the Jewish population to obey the laws of the country. Viata Moua says that this document “unmasks the treason of the Jewish bourgeoisie.”
