Premier David Ben Gurion today conferred with leaders of the Jewish Agency executive on the Agency’s request for a special status in Israel for the World Zionist Organization.
The Jewish Agency was represented at the conference by Berl Locker, Dr. Nahum Goldmann and Levi Eshkol. It was reported earlier that a suggestion has been made that the Jewish Agency should deal with immigration and the immigration camps in Israel, while the work connected with the absorption of immigrants be transferred to the Israel Government.
A suggestion that the headquarters of the Jewish Agency be in Jerusalem, which was made at the Agency’s plenary session here this week, was dropped today when it became clear that it represents the views of a minority within the Agency’s executive. It was indicated that the likeliest recommendation to be forthcoming will be to maintain the status quo–an Israeli branch of the Agency in Jerusalem and an American branch with offices in New York.
Delegates of the Zionist Organization of America who arrived here to participate in the World Zionist Congress today held their first meeting and elected Dr. Abba Hillel Silver and Benjamin Browdy co-chairmen of the American delegation.
