Tentative plans have been made for visits to the United States by Israel Government and Jewish Agency leaders to help spark the United Jewish Appeal campaign, it was announced here today after the second of a series of top-level meetings of government, Agency and U.J.A. leaders.
“It is hoped that some Israel leaders will appear at the October meeting” of the U.J.A. in New York, Edward M.M. Warburg, general chairman of the U.J.A. told newsmen today. He expressed confidence that the Appeal would surpass the $80,000,000 it raised in 1950. Up to now it has raised $55,000,000 and its goal for the remainder of the year is $35,000,000.
Mr. Warburg reported that of the sum already collected, $33,000,000 went to the United Palestine Appeal and the Joint Distribution Committee spent another $5,000,000 on its program in Israel, thus a total of $ 38,000,000 of U.J.A. funds reached Israel. The chief reason that the remaining $35,000,000 is needed is to help Jews in the Near East and Eastern Europe reach Israel and to provide housing for them after they arrive, he stated.
Mr. Warburg and Dr. Joseph J. Schwartz, executive vice-chairman of the U.J.A. revealed that Premier David Ben Gurion had “expressed gratification at the U.J.A. work of keeping American Jewry informed of the plight of Jews who must find haven in Israel.” Dr. Nahum Goldmann, chairman of the Jewish Agency executive, said that only because of the “selfless devotion” of the U.J.A. leadership was the campaign a success.
