The United Nations Economic and Social Council, in plenary session, yesterday voted to discontinue, until 1954, its Subcommission for the Prevention of Discrimination and the Protection of Minorities. At the same time, however, the Council decided upon steps designed to continue the U.N.’s efforts to prevent discrimination and to protect minorities.
The Council also voted to continue annual meetings of the Commission on Human Rights until 1954, when the Council will again review its activities. Some of the functions of the subcommission on discrimination will be taken over by the Human Rights Commission. The Council adopted a resolution, previously approved by its co-ordination committee, dealing with continued efforts to prevent discrimination and protect minorities.
