The strike of locomotive engineers which started in Israel yesterday, paralyzing rail traffic throughout the country, was declared illegal today by the Histadrut, Israel Federation of Labor.
The Histadrut executive decided to order the strikers to resume work immediately, under pain of disciplinary action. Adopting this decision unanimously, the executive explained that the Histadrut does not approve of the strike because it jeopardizes the prestige of the labor movement and severely affects essential services in the country.
The locomotive engineers started their strike Sunday evening on a small scale, following submission of demands for higher wages. However, the strike assumed larger proportions when it became known that the Histadrut opposed it. Today, all railway traffic was at a standstill in protest against the Histadrut’s outlawing of the strike and threatening the strikers with expulsion.
