The question of whether to continue its efforts to end the state of war between Israel and the Arab states was discussed here today by the members of the Palestine Conciliation Commission, as preparations were completed for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly tomorrow. No decision was announced.
The Commission has received no replies from either Israel or the Arab states to its last appeal for a “yes” or “no” answer as to whether the parties are prepared to discuss the Commission’s five-point proposal for settling problems between Israel and the Arab countries. However, it is understood that the Israel reply was being drafted and may be delivered by tomorrow.
The Israel delegation to the U.N. General Assembly will be headed temporarily by Arthur Lourie since Israel’s Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett is not expected to arrive here before tomorrow evening. Mr. Sharett is expected to remain at the United Nations session till the end of December. He will then be succeeded by Ambassador Abba Eban, who is not attending the early meetings of the Assembly because his presence in Washington is urgently needed at the present time.
