W.J. Browne, a Conservative member of Parliament, told the Canadian legislature that “we are having National Socialism in Canada today” owing to the fact that Dr. Alfred Valdmanis, former Latvian Minister of Finance, who was once a special assistant to Dr. Hjalmar Schacht and also served as an economic consultant to Nazi Germany during World War 11, is now director-general of economic development for Newfoundland.

Mr. Browne charged that Valdmanis was behind the importation into Newfoundland of a steady stream of German industries and technicians in what he described as a “mad venture into National Socialism.” Valdmanis appeared two years ago before the Immigration and Labor Committee and pleaded for the entry into Canada of 20,000 members of the Baltic Waffen Gestapo, who had fought alongside the Nazis during the Second World War, and assisted the Nazis in mass annihilation of Jews.
