Dr. Emil Schmorak has ceased to be comptroller of the Jewish Agency and the office of the comptroller has virtually ceased to function since December 1, Dr. Schmorak today told a press conference here. He pointed out that his term of office was originally set until December 1 and that since he was not re-elected to the post he is now “a private person. “
The former comptroller explained his “non-cooperation” with a Jewish Agency committee which he said attempted to eliminate entire chapters of his report and to completely change others. To this, he said, he could not agree as a “matter of conscience as well as a matter of principle of independent control. ” He also stated that the Agency’s treasurer refused to submit documents to the comptroller’s office, although all other departments “cooperated fully. ” Dr. Schmorak announced that he had written the praesidium of the World Zionist Organization to explain his position.
(In London, a Jewish Agency spokesman today said that Dr. Schmorak presented only one side of the case. He added that a committee of three is working on the parts of the report which Dr. Schmorak claims to have been deleted and that the committee is seeking additional information.)
