Declaring that the Middle East is today “the most dangerous spot on earth, ” Dr. Paul Hutchinson, editor of The Christian Century, strongly attacked American Zionists for their “unremitting pressure” on the U.S. Government for aid to Israel. He spoke at the annual meeting of Chicago chapter of the American Council for Judaism.

“We cannot hold the confidence and support in world affairs of the Arabs, and hence of the Moslem lands, if they become convinced that the United States is a pro-Zionist partisan,” Dr. Hutchinson said. “Yet that is the very thing of which the Zionist pressure on our government is trying to convince them!

“Some American Zionists may not themselves realize what they are doing, ” he continued. “It is time they did realize. By their unremitting pressure on our government for loans, gifts and other forms of extraordinary help for Israel, in a measure far beyond that offered any of her neighbors, they are spreading the idea in the Middle East that the United States will offer the Israeli Government the guarantee of our power that Israel’s future shall be made secure and her ambitions satisfied no matter what effect the policies of the Israeli Government may have on the rest of the Middle East.”

Lauding the American Council for Judaism, for resisting “the folly of this policy, ” Dr. Hutchinson observed that “the tide seemed to be turning toward the Council’s viewpoint as far as the effectiveness of Zionist propaganda was concerned.”
