Major Jewish organizations today termed “a step in the right direction, ” the creation of the Committee on Government Contract Compliance by Executive Order of President Truman, which is to prevent discrimination in employment in defense work.
Regretting the fact that the President had not created an equivalent of the World War II F.E.P.C., the organizations expressed their hope that “the composition of the Committee and the machinery it will set up will be such as to insure fullest realization of the potential of the Executive Order. “
Joining in the statement were the American Jewish Committee, the American Jewish Congress, the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, Jewish Labor Committee, Jewish War Veterans of the U.S., and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, together with the National Community Relations Advisory Council, which is the coordinating body for these six national organizations and for 27 local Jewish councils throughout the country. Also joining was the National Council of Jewish Women.
