The trial of Col. Thomas Gerrard Gore, commanding officer of a British unit in Palestine when the Jewish State was proclaimed, who is charged with having received funds from the Jewish underground for the diversion of British arms to the Israelis, opened today before a British Army court martial.
Chief witness against Col. Gore is former Major Ralph Herbert Thomas Newman, convicted several weeks ago of receiving 16,000 pounds for the diversion of the weapons. Newman, who was brought from prison where he is serving a six-month term, testified that Col. Gore told him what arms were surplus and could be diverted to the Jews and accounted for on the records as having been destroyed. Col. Gore, who pleaded not guilty, is said to have received 2,886 pounds from Newman, who was his subordinate officer in Palestine, knowing that the money was received for the sale of arms to the Jewish underground.
