The four hundred-odd Israeli seamen who formally ended their strike against the Histadrut yesterday today began returning to their ships while the new Histadrut-sponsored national maritime union began the job of registering all seamen. It was learned here today that with the acquisition of two new ships by the Israel merchant fleet jobs will be found for all strikers who were replaced by “volunteers” recruited by the Histadrut to sail the struck vessels.
In addition to providing jobs for all strikers and the “volunteers,” the agreement between the strikers and the new union provided that the Histadrut would use its influence to attempt to have released from the Israeli armed forces any strikers drafted during the work stoppage. The strike, which lasted over 40 days, affected over 600 seamen and 17 vessels at its height.
