Israel is expected to oppose plans to transform the United Nations (###) Commission on Palestine into a body composed of permanent representatives of the United States. France and Turkey, reseat members of the commission, it was learned today. The proposal is expected to come up for discussion when the General Assembly resumes its session next week. The three-nation commission recently reported to the General Assembly complete failure in its attempts to establish peace between Israel and the Arab states.
The Israelis, it is reported, will take the position that the United Nations should admit that “the problem of peace settlement is simply one of interstate relations which had better be left to the states concerned.” The Israelis are also expected to point out that the Palestine Conciliation Commission’s “record of failure over the past three years has shattered the illusion that third-party conciliation or mediation can after the basic facts of the deadlock.”
