The Union of Italian Jewish Communities has appealed to the Ministry of Public Welfare for assistance to Italian Jewish refugees from the Trieste and Pola areas and for temporary aid to Jews passing through Italy to Israel who are stranded for weeks and sometimes months. The Trieste and Pola refugees are turned away when they appeal for public assistance because they come from territory which is not now Italian.
Meanwhile, the Union is preparing a protest to the Finance Ministry against its demands for payment of inheritance taxes by relatives of Jews who were deported to their deaths by the fascists and Naxis during the war. The Union points out that the law provides that persons who inherit the property of victims of Nazi and Fascist reprisals or other war causes are exempted from payment of inheritance taxes.
