Leonard Bernstein, famous conductor, today assumed his new duties as director of the Brandeis University School of Creative Arts. Under his direction the school will integrate courses in music, drama, creative writing, the fine arts and the dance.
“The Brandeis Creative Arts School will not only combine instrumental instruction with esthetic and cultural studies of an advanced musical degree, but will integrate courses in music, fine arts, and the dance and strike a balance between the theoretical study of the creative arts and an applied study emphasizing the point to which each art form is put,” Mr. Bernstein said in a statement here today.
“Students arriving at Brandeis will undoubtedly possess technical abilities, Mr. Bernstein declared, “and for that reason the University will not devote itself to teaching piano, or draftsmanship or the fundamentals of any art. But with an impressive faculty, “the young musician stated. “Brandeis will help to provide the finishing touches in technique and at the same time emphasize the meaning of art.”
