Israel Ambassador Abba Eban, following a conference with Acting Secretary of State James E. Webb, told newsmen yesterday that he was “hopeful” that the United States would extend Israel additional economic aid.
The Ambassador declined to discuss with reporters the exact amount of assistance expected. Administration officials indicated this weekend, however, that Israel would receive about the same amount, approximately $65,000,000, which was appropriated to the Jewish State in the Mutual Security Act of 1951.
In the meantime, it was announced here today that the United States and Jordan signed a pact last week providing for $2,780,000 in assistance from this country. The new program, the State Department said, follows a general Point Four agreement signed by the two governments a year ago.
(A report from Cairo today said that Jordan signed a collective security pact with the six other Arab League governments, laying the groundwork for what eventually may become the foundation for the projected Middle East Defense Command sponsored by the Western Powers.)
