Israel will achieve economic independence in the near future, Abba Hushi, Mayor of Haifa, predicted today upon his arrival here for a five-week tour of the United States on behalf of State of Israel Bonds. Upon his landing, Mayor Hushi was met by a welcoming committee headed by Grover Whalen, chairman of Mayor Impellitteri’s reception committee.

In a statement to the press, Mayor Hushi said his greatest joy is “that we have reached the point where we can accelerate the economic development of our country through borrowing rather than depending only upon philanthropic aid. We have discovered enormous mineral resources in Israel. If we can borrow enough capital to develop these resources we will be able to establish our economy on firm foundation and will easily be able to pay back the lean and the interest.”
