The first large-scale cultural exchange between America and Israel was launched here over the week-end with the departure for Israel of 119 American Hebrew teachers and students who will participate in Jewish Agency-sponsored summer programs in that country this year.
The two groups, hailing from 24 states and Canada, left Idlewild International Airport last night and today. The teachers, 29 in number, will participate in a special seminar and refresher courses conducted in Jerusalem by the Department for Education and Culture of the World Zionist Organization.
Dr. Hayim Greenberg, head of the Jewish Agency’s Department of Education, hailed “this spiritual link between American culture and Hebrew culture, centered in Israel.” He announced that the seminar to be held in Jerusalem is of global scope. The American teacher will be joined by groups of teachers from Great Britain and French North Africa. On August 25, he said, a selected group of senior students of Hebrew teacher’s seminaries in this country will leave for six months training in Israel.
