The Vienna Jewish Community has protested to the People’s Party, Chancellor Leopold Figl’s party, against an anti-Semitic attack in the party’s publication against Jewish “emigres” from Austria.
The community took exception to an article in “Das Kleine Volksblatt” which blamed some of the Austrian Government’s difficulty with the Allied Control Council over a plan to amnesty ex-Nazis who were prisoners of war, on “emigres” who were said to be working in the American High Commission offices and influencing policy on such matters.
The Austrian newspaper’s response to the Jewish protest was to state that there were no anti-Semites on the paper and to state that it “respects the Jews as a people.” Insisting that the article only attacked a few specific Jews for their actions the newspaper said that references to their being Jews was “necessary” for an “understanding” of the matter.
