New regulations which will give the government the right to conscript doctors between 30 and 34 years of age for a period of two years service in the armed forces–as well as physicians from 35 to 38 years of age for a period of one year’s service–will be introduced in the Knesset today by Premier David Ben Gurion in his capacity as Defense Minister.
The Israel Government also intends to extend the period of compulsory military service by a further six months. Those in the age groups of 18-26 will serve for 30 months instead of two years, while those in the 27-29 age category will serve two years instead of 18 months. An exception will be made for new immigrants whose period of service will remain 18 months.
